Before the Silver Cord Breaks

Dust returns
To what is was
My body with it scatters
And my spirit
To You will soar
And all that passes
Between life and life
And death and life
Is fleeting
If not fashioned
After Your heart

O God
Before the silver cord breaks
Before the golden bowl is ground
Like powder
Let me remember You
Let my heart return to You
Let my seeking be for You
My hunger You alone

O God
Before the pitcher beside the well
Shatters into pieces
Before the cistern wheel
Crushes beneath time’s grinding
Into nothingness
Let me know You
Let this knowledge
This seeking
Be my soul’s stay
My thirst for You alone
